Treatment of chronic pain with Gabapentin (Neurontin).

Anticonvulsants, also known as antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), are a varied assortment of  pharmaceuticals designed to treat epileptic seizures. They are increasingly being used as a therapy to help those who suffer from bipolar disorder, since they work to stabilize people’s moods.

For the treatment of chronic pain, such as in migraines and neuropathy, the anticonvulsants which as Pregabalin and Gabapentin are used. Also effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, and sleeping disorders, drugs are included with actions of very different modes.

Gabapentin is also approved to treat fatigue, cognitive issues, neurological dysfunction, flu-like symptoms, bowel and bladder problems, muscular tension, restless leg syndrome, and multiple chemical sensitivity. In the treatment of CFS/ME, the ability to work on many symptoms at the same time, has given them the reputation of being one of the most important drugs.

The side effects of anticonvulsants vary from drug to drug and from person to person. The earlier ones may occasionally give rise to liver troubles and other difficult reactions. Sedation is more likely with the newer medications.

Some common side effects include headaches, dizziness, and impaired vision. A few anticonvulsants, such as topiramate, vigabatrin, and zonisamide, may cause loss of weight, while some can cause weight gain.

One of the most widely used CFS/ME and fibromyalgia treatments is Neurontin or gabapentin. This treatment can help solve a wide variety of problems such as interstitial cystitis and hot flashes. Often it is used in the treatment of mood problems and anxiety disorders. For the treatment of neuropathy, with its burning or electric shock-like pain, it is popular.
